Security and CAT-iq, how do these combine?

At the last HOPE Hacker congress in New York last week, security was a very important topic.

One of the speakers, with the name Renderman said that a user of a laptop, cell phone headset, building access badge, credit cards, or even a passport can become walking target for data thieves and other criminals.

He particularly talked about Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RFID data attacks. Read the full story in C/net.news.com.

Although CAT-iq products will be centralised in the home environment, security remains an issue. How well secured is CAT-iq?

Let the technical people speak.

Remember the good old days of Analogue phones, where you could listen to the phone calls of your neighbours simply by listening on the channel they were using? This is not the case with DECT.
DECT is protected in two ways: Authentification, to avoid that somebody registers a new pirate handset to your installation, and Encryption, to avoid communications being overheard.
--DECT authentication: for registering a handset, the user puts the base in registration mode, and enters a unique PIN-code on the handset. Thus, it is impossible to register a handset to a phone which is not your own: you have to have physically acces to the existing device to add a new handset.
Most handsets are sold as pre-registered packs.
--DECT encryption: All communications between base and handset are encrypted with a set of keys which are renewed for each call. Thus it is impossible to listen to the communications of a phone you don't own.
All in all, the security of DECT has never been an issue.
