Gigaset, Samsung, VTech Certify First CAT-iq 2.0 Handsets
The DECT Forum, the international association of the wireless home and enterprise communication industry, is pleased to announce that Gigaset Communications, Samsung Electronics, and VTech Telecommunications have successfully passed the CAT-iq 2.0 test program and achieved the qualification for the first certified CAT-iq 2.0 handsets.
The first three CAT-iq 2.0 certificates have been issued for different cordless phone vendors: CAT-iq 2.0 handsets from Gigaset Communications (Gigaset C300H iq), Samsung Electronics (SMT-W3510), and VTech Telecommunications (VTech Avant 5000) have successfully passed the Qualification Program.
CAT-iq 2.0 is the DECT Forum driven voice centric profile for next generation DECT technology. CAT-iq 2.0 offers HD voice, multiple lines, three party conferencing, call transfer, phonebook synchronization and many other features. CAT-iq 2.0 signifies the introduction of DECT into the home gateway giving it native IP connectivity and making it a true broadband wireless home networking technology. Its integration into the Home Gateway implies that it will initially carrier driven.
Many major European carriers are investing in the CAT-iq technology, so a certification program is a key criterion for the success of the industry and for the benefit of the end-customers. Interoperability between different handsets manufacturers is guaranteed when used on CAT-iq 2.0 certified base stations.
“The CAT-iq 2.0 Certification Program gives vendors the opportunity to enter the broadband VoIP market. This is a significant opportunity for carriers to offer more value add services like HD voice and multiple lines, supporting strategies to retain customer loyalty and win over new customers”, says Daniel Hartnett, Chairman CAT-iq Working Group within the DECT Forum.
The DECT Forum has appointed CETECOM (www.cetecom.com) and Nemko (www.nemko.com) official CAT-iq 2.0 certification test houses and certification bodies.

Invitation: CAT-iq Branding Workshop in Paris May 12, 2011
Dear Member of the DECT Forum,
The DECT Forum and HGI are facilitating a workshop on the Marketing of CAT-iq. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss and gain consensus on which features of CAT-iq (including but not limited to HD voice) could be used to construct a compelling value proposition for the End-User, and how such a proposition could be successfully marketed and positioned.
Workshop participants are expected from the member companies of the DECT Forum and HGI and also from other interested organisations like CableLabs and associated operators.
Background:
During 2009/2010, the HGI and DECT Forum have cooperated to create a new industry standard called DECT CAT-iq (Cordless Advanced Technology), generating two release of the standard CAT -iq 2.0, CAT- iq 2.1, and an emerging market of home gateway with CAT-iq functionality and handsets working to this standard.
While CAT-iq has been well accepted as an internal industry brand, it is still not clear the brand would be used as such for the end customer. Also as new gateway devices are deployed by HGI members integrating CAT-iq 2.0, it is also questioned how these home gateway devices will market the new capability to end-customers. Also from the device manufacturers viewpoint, more and more handsets will be enabled with CAT-iq functionality, possibly also on platforms sold for PSTN, and again the question arises as to how to market to the end consumer. Following the DECT World Conference 2011 in Amsterdam, it was proposed to create a workshop to gather stakeholders relevant for this discussion.
Objectives of the workshop:
- Common industry branding of the technology, front of the box/back of the box
- Analysing the transition from PSTN market to CAT-iq market
- User Experience in connecting a phone on a home gateway
- Assuring quality: Compliance & Testing
A provisional date for the workshop has been set for 12th May, hosted by Orange France Telecom in Paris.
We would appreciate your quick feedback on your interest in attending the workshop. Full agenda and details will be provided once the date is confirmed.
If you are interested to attend this workshop, please respond to ruth.wilson@dspg.com or secretariat@dect.org by 27/04/11.
Look forwards to hearing your positive response.
Kind regards,
Ruth Wilson

DECT Forum Announces Opening of CAT-iq 2.0 Certification Program
The DECT Forum has announced the opening of the CAT-iq 2.0 Certification Program. With the Certification Program in place CAT-iq is a key voice and networking technology in home gateways.
2011 promises to be an exciting year in the DECT industry. The first official CAT-iq carrier gateways and handsets will hit the shelves in the early part of the year. CAT-iq – the next generation of DECT – integrates the base station into the home gateway, giving it native IP connectivity.
According to Daniel Hartnett, Chairman of the CAT-iq Working Group within the DECT Forum, enables CAT-iq carriers to offer new value add services, create more loyalty with their customers and generate new revenue streams. The Certification Program establishes CAT-iq as one of the key networking technologies in the home gateway and benefits from the real-life interoperability testing which has been established in the IOP test events held prior to its opening. The program tests devices on protocol, audio and RF (radio frequency) level. All testers have been validated with multiple product implementations.
CAT-iq 2.0 (ETSI TS 102-527-3 v1.3.1) enables customers to make end to end VoIP calls with all the extras that come with SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) telephony: wideband voice quality, multiple lines and synchronized phone books. Certified CAT-iq 2.0 handsets from different system vendors can be used on the same certified base station. They are interoperable with other CAT-iq handsets and gateways as well as being backward compatible to DECT GAP products. CAT-iq handset will be initially available through operators services, later CAT-iq devices will be also be available through the retail channel.
System vendors who are full members of the DECT Forum can certify CAT-iq 2.0 equipment at one of two qualified certification labs: Cetecom (Germany) and Nemko (Norway).
The goals of the CAT-iq 2.0 Certification Program are:
- promotes CAT-iq to market stakeholders, – end users, carriers, retailers as a technically credible implementation of conformity to a set of standards that will add value to their industry/lives.
- ensures interoperability of devices from multiple manufacturers for functionalities defined in CAT-iq.
- ensures a mandatory level of quality requirement for specific product parameters to achieve consistent user experience of the different stakeholders.
For more information about the CAT-iq 2.0 Certification Program and the complete documentation (“CAT-iq Certification Handbook”) please visit the DECT Forum website.
CAT-iq – Technology of Choice for Home Voice and Data Applications
The DECT Forum, the international association of the wireless home and enterprise communication industry, is pleased to announce the availability of CAT-iq White Papers. The White Papers – part 1 “voice” and part 2 “data” – outline the current status and the future profile descriptions of CAT-iq – the technology of choice for voice and data applications.
CAT-iq stands for Cordless Advanced Technology, Internet and Quality, and is the global technology initiative from the DECT Forum, designed for IP-voice services in the next generation networks. CAT-iq focuses on high quality wideband Audio VoIP as well as low bit-rate data applications. The CAT-iq profiles are split between voice and data services, with CAT-iq 1.0 and CAT-iq 2.0 providing features to support key voice enhancements, and CAT-iq 3.0 and CAT-iq 4.0 providing features to support data.
